Elementary School Academic Day

Elementary Academic Day does not have a State Event

Region Events: 2/15/24 - 2/29/24

General Schedule of the Day:

  • 9 AM - Welcome/ Opening Prayer
  • 9:20 AM - Quiz Bowl (3rd - 5th Grade Team)
  • 9:30 AM - Oral Spelling Bee Begins (we will start with 1st Grade and move up through 3rd Grade)
  • 9:45 AM - Science Fair (3rd - 5th Grade)
  • 12 noon - LUNCH
  • 12:45 PM - Morning Awards
  • 1 PM - Math Bowl (3rd - 5th Grades - one team per grade level)
  • 1 PM - Written Spelling Bee (4th and 5th Grades)
  • 2:30 PM - Afternoon Awards

  • 2/20/24: Lafayette Christian School (off site) - LaGrange, GA
  • 2/22/24: The King's Academy - Woodstock, GA
  • 2/29/24: Heritage Christian Academy - Brunswick, GA

Math Bowl Basic Format: 

  • Individual and team event for grades 3-5 consisting of two (2) rounds.
    • Each student will take the same individual quiz. Students will have 30 minutes to complete the quiz. This must be done individually with no communication between students and coaches at all. 
    • The individual quiz will be a combination of computational and reasoning questions.
    • The average of the top three (3) scores from each team will count in the overall score. 
    • The 4-student team will be given 20 problems to solve. They will have 30 minutes in which to solve the quiz. The team may work together or separately to solve the problems, but only one (1) answer sheet per team will be turned in. 
    • The team quiz will consist mainly of reasoning questions. Complex computation may also be included.
    • All answers will be turned in on an “Answer Sheet” with the team’s name clearly written on it. 
    • No partial credit will be given. 

    • Round 1: Individual Quiz 
    • Round 2: Team Quiz 
  • A school may send four (4) students from each grade (3rd, 4th, & 5th).
  • Medals will be given to the highest-scoring teams and individual medals will be given to the highest-scoring individual student per grade. 

Quiz Bowl Basic Format: 

    • Team is composed of students from 3rd - 5th grade.
    • There will be 12 toss-up questions per round, plus a two-part bonus question for each correctly answered toss-up. 
    • Competitions will be set up as round robins unless otherwise stated.
    • Each round will generally last 20 minutes.
    • Medals will be given to the highest-scoring teams and individual medals will be given to the highest-scoring individual student per grade. 
  • Points: Both toss-up and bonus questions are worth 10 points apiece.

Science Fair Basic Format: 

  •  Each school may send three (3) projects from Elementary School (3rd - 5th). 
    • Projects may be the work of individuals or groups of no more than 3 students.
  • Schools are expected to host their own Science Fair in order to determine the students selected to attend. 
  • The top three (3) placing projects will receive medals. 
  • A rubric for judging will be provided.
  • Any discipline of science can be represented in the projects.
  • Students will be given approximately three (3) feet of table space to display their project. 
  • At least one (1) student per project will be interviewed by the judges.

Spelling Bee Basic Format: 

Elementary Academic Day will include 5 spelling Bees: 1 for each grade (1st – 5th)

General Information

Elementary School Spelling Bee:

  • Individual event for grades 1st-5th
  • A school may send 2 students for each grade 
  • An oral spelling bee for grades 1-3; written for grades 4 & 5* NEW using grade-appropriate words and the rules listed in this manual under Spelling Bee. Lists and rules will be up on the GAPPS website no later than Sept. 1 of the current school year.
    Note: GAPPS will use this list for the first 2 rounds, then reserves the right to go off-list (will start off list words at the beginning of a round)

This Bee is currently not under Scripps, but the same rules will apply. If your school plans to advance to Scripps-Howard, you must register with Scripps individually.
