Middle School Academic Day has regions all over Georgia. The Middle School Championship will be held on Monday, November 4th at Northway Church in Macon.

General Schedule:

  • 8:30- Arrive and check-in
  • 9:00- Coaches’ meeting for Essay, History, and Math
  • 9:30- Math & Essay begin
  • 9:45- History
  • 11:30- Lunch Break
  • 12:30 (or 1 hour after the last morning event finishes) 
    • Math & History Awards
    • Coaches' Meeting for Geo & Spelling
  • 12:45- Geo Bee & Spelling Bee begin
  • 3:00(or earlier) - Awards for Essay, Spelling, & Geo

Coaches PLEASE be aware of all rules and train your students. They and you should have gone through a couple of practices to know how each event operates.  

General Information

Math Bowl (Team event for 4 at a time)
GAPPS RULES - MATH BOWL

  • Each school may send 1 team of 4 students plus alternates
  • Students may be a combination of grades 5-8 or all from 1 grade
  • 4 Rounds (check the manual for details)
  • Each round should last 30 minutes
  • The winning team advances to State

Middle School Spelling Bee
GAPPS RULES - SPELLING BEE

  • Individual event 
  • A school may send a total of 3 students from middle school (any combination of grades 6-8)
  • (Started in 2021) A written spelling bee using grade-appropriate words and the rules listed in this manual under Spelling Bee. Lists and rules will be up on the GAPPS website no later than Sept. 1 of the current school year. Note: only 10-15% of the provided list will be used in the Region Spelling Bee and another 10-15% will be used in the State Spelling Bee.
  • Medals are awarded to the top two placing students 
  • The top 2 will go to the state competition

This Bee is currently not under Scripps, but the same rules will apply. If your school plans to advance to Scripps-Howard, you must register with Scripps individually.

MS Essay
GAPPS RULES - PERSONAL ESSAY

  • Each school may enter one (1) contestant.  The contestant may be either male or female. 
  • The GAPPS office will prepare a list of topics for the Region and State Literary competitions. 
  • All essays will be written in ink.
  • One (1) hour will be given to write the essay.
  • No other materials, coaching, or dictionaries will be allowed in the room.
  • Students will be given a choice of 3 prompts.
  • Scratch paper will be provided as well as the final draft paper.

Geography Bee
GAPPS RULES - GEOGRAPHY BEE

  • Students in grades 5th-8th
  • Geography Bee will be held during the Middle School Academic Days for Region competition.
  • Individual event MS students
  • A school may send 6 students 
  • Students will have 1 preliminary round of 36 questions, then the top 12 will move on to Semis, and top 6 to Finals
  • Medals are given to the top 3.
  • The top 6 will move on to the state competition
  • Questions will be read and answered on Socrative (an online educational app)
  • Three rounds of 12 questions each will be played for a total of 36 questions in the preliminary rounds, presented simultaneously.
    • The questions will be broken down as follows:
      • 12 American Geography
      • 12 World Geography
      • 12 Bible Geography
